Brett J. King
Brett is an enrolled member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians, a graduate student in the Master of Advocacy and Political Leadership program at Metropolitan State University, and a dedicated advocate for Indigenous communities and justice-impacted individuals. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Metropolitan State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2026.
Drawing from both professional experience and lived experience, Brett has devoted his work to advancing educational access, cultural reclamation, and opportunities for individuals navigating recovery, reentry, and systemic barriers. He currently serves with the Indigenous Peoples Task Force, where he provides culturally responsive case management, advocacy, care coordination, and community-based support services for Native individuals and families.
Brett is a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and has held leadership roles in higher education and community initiatives, including serving as a TREC Academic Transitions VISTA Project Coordinator and Community Outreach Coordinator. His work bridges advocacy, policy, and direct service, with a particular focus on supporting Indigenous communities, justice-impacted students, and underserved populations.
A committed student leader, Brett serves as President of SOLVE (Shaping Opportunities for Leadership, Vision, and Equality), a student organization dedicated to educational equity, leadership development, and advocacy. He has also serves in student governance through the Metro State University Student Association and as a member of the Students United Board of Trustees.
Beyond his professional and academic pursuits, Brett is active in the revitalization and celebration of Indigenous culture and community. He sings on the Big Drum with the Painted Spirit drum group and views cultural connection, education, and community leadership as essential pathways toward healing and self-determination.
Through his leadership, scholarship, and service, Brett works to create systems and opportunities that empower individuals, strengthen communities, and advance equity for future generations.
